- Hungarian Civil Registration
Already Hungarian? Keep Your Records Up to Date.
If you are a Hungarian citizen living abroad, you are required to register important changes in your civil status with the Hungarian authorities.
This includes, in particular:
- the birth of your children;
- your marriage;
- your divorce;
- and, where relevant, the death of a spouse.
These obligations also apply if your Hungarian citizenship was recently verified or acquired through naturalization. Once you are a Hungarian citizen, your Hungarian civil records should continue to reflect the important events in your life
Hungarian civil registration (hazai anyakönyvezés) is the process of registering in Hungary a civil-status event that took place abroad. Hungarian citizens are expected to keep their Hungarian civil records up to date. This means registering a child born abroad, a marriage celebrated abroad, or a divorce granted by a foreign court. These registrations are not merely administrative formalities. For example, if a Hungarian citizen has a child abroad, the child’s birth must be registered in Hungary before the child’s Hungarian documentation can be fully established; and if a Hungarian citizen changes marital status, the Hungarian records should reflect that change. Hungarian citizens must keep their Hungarian civil records up to date, including births, marriages, divorces, and a spouse's death. This is not merely a formality: if your marital status has changed abroad and you have not registered the event in Hungary, you generally cannot proceed with a Hungarian passport application or renewal until the registration is complete.

Not yet a Hungarian citizen?
Civil registration is for people whose Hungarian citizenship is already established. If yours has not been confirmed yet, start with citizenship verification or, where that does not apply, simplified naturalization.
