Citizenship Verification

Could You Already Be a Hungarian Citizen?

In some families, Hungarian citizenship continued through later generations even after the family left Hungary.

If that applies to you, the correct procedure may be citizenship verification rather than naturalization. Hungarian-language proficiency is not required for verification.

In short

Hungarian citizenship verification (in Hungarian: állampolgárság igazolása) is the official procedure that confirms you already hold Hungarian citizenship – usually because it passed down your family line from a Hungarian ancestor, even after the family left Hungary. It is for people who may already be citizens, not an application to become one, and Hungarian-language proficiency is not required. I assess your family’s citizenship history, build the documentary chain between the generations and prepare the application.

What I do

  • Assess the relevant citizenship history.
  • Build the documentary chain between generations.
  • Research missing or conflicting records.
  • Prepare the application and supporting documentation.

When records are difficult

A missing certificate does not necessarily end the case. I work with archival and alternative sources when records are missing, names changed or historical borders complicate the evidence.

After verification

Once citizenship is established, I can also assist with relevant Hungarian civil-registration and administrative steps.

Not sure whether verification applies?

If citizenship did not pass down your family line without interruption, simplified naturalization may be the route instead. The frequently asked questions explain the difference, including what happens when an ancestor emigrated long ago or the ancestral town is no longer in Hungary.
