An unregistered marriage, divorce, or other important life event can prevent you from renewing your Hungarian passport. Hungarian citizens must register these events through a procedure called hazai anyakönyvezés. Keeping your records updated helps avoid delays and complications when applying for Hungarian documents.
Why Hungarian Citizens Living Abroad Must Keep Their Family Records Up to Date
You have Hungarian citizenship. You have your Hungarian passport. Perhaps you obtained citizenship through your parents or grandparents, or completed the naturalization process years ago.
Everything seems settled.
But what happens when your Hungarian passport expires and you need to renew it?
You may discover that a marriage, divorce, or other important life event that took place abroad was never registered with the Hungarian authorities.
And this can prevent you from submitting your passport renewal application.
This is something many Hungarian citizens living abroad discover only when they need a new passport.
Can You Renew Your Hungarian Passport Without Registering Your Marriage?
Generally, you should not expect to renew your Hungarian passport while relevant changes in your civil status remain unregistered.
The Hungarian Embassies in Tel Aviv and The Hague explicitly state that passport applications and renewals cannot be submitted if relevant life events, including marriages and divorces, have not been registered in Hungary.
The Hungarian Consulate General in New York also requires foreign civil-status events to be registered and specifies that a marriage-related name change must be registered before applying for a new passport.
This applies even if you have held a Hungarian passport for years.
For example, imagine that you obtained Hungarian citizenship ten years ago. Since then, you married in the United States but never registered your marriage in Hungary.
Your Hungarian passport is now approaching its expiration date.
When you contact the Hungarian consulate to renew it, you may be instructed to register your marriage before your passport application can proceed.
Even if you did not change your surname when you married, the marriage itself must still be registered.
The obligation to register a foreign marriage is independent of whether you wish to change your Hungarian documents.
What If You Divorced Abroad?
The same issue can arise following a divorce.
Suppose you registered your marriage in Hungary, subsequently divorced in Israel, and never reported the divorce to the Hungarian authorities.
Your Hungarian records may still show you as married.
Before processing a new passport application, the consulate may require you to update your marital status through the appropriate Hungarian civil registration procedure.
If you have since remarried, the situation can become more complicated. Previous marriages and divorces may need to be documented and registered in the correct sequence.
This is why it is better to address missing civil registrations before your passport becomes an urgent matter.
Your Child Is Hungarian. But Can You Obtain a Hungarian Passport for Them?
If you were a Hungarian citizen when your child was born, your child will generally have acquired Hungarian citizenship automatically by descent, even if the birth took place outside Hungary.
However, having Hungarian citizenship and having the documentation necessary to obtain a Hungarian passport are not the same thing.
Your child's foreign birth must be registered in the Hungarian civil registration system.
This procedure allows the Hungarian authorities to establish the child's Hungarian birth record and issue a Hungarian birth certificate.
In many cases, the child's first Hungarian passport application can be submitted together with the birth registration application.
However, you cannot simply assume that a foreign birth certificate and your Hungarian passport will be sufficient on their own.
If your own marriage was never registered in Hungary, that may also need to be addressed as part of your child's documentation.
What Is Hazai Anyakönyvezés?
The procedure for registering foreign civil-status events in Hungary is called hazai anyakönyvezés, or domestic registration.
Hungarian citizens are required to register relevant life events that occurred abroad, including:
Births
Marriages
Divorces
Deaths
These events do not automatically appear in Hungarian records simply because they were registered in another country.
For example, if you married in New York, had a child in London, or divorced in Israel, the relevant event may need to be registered in Hungary, supported by the appropriate foreign civil-status documents.
The required documentation depends on the circumstances and the country where the event occurred. Foreign records may require authentication, additional supporting documents, or certified translations.
Why You Should Not Leave This Until Your Passport Expires
Registering a foreign marriage, divorce, or birth is not necessarily a quick administrative formality.
You may need to obtain original civil certificates, locate records from earlier marriages, arrange translations, or resolve discrepancies involving names and personal details.
In more complicated cases, particularly where several countries are involved, collecting the necessary documents can take considerable time.
The registration procedure itself may also take months.
If you discover the problem shortly before an important trip or when you urgently need a valid Hungarian passport, you may have limited options.
The best time to bring your Hungarian civil records up to date is before you need a new passport—not when it is about to expire.
How Can You Register a Marriage, Birth, or Divorce in Hungary?
Applications for hazai anyakönyvezés can generally be submitted at a Hungarian consulate abroad or through the competent authorities in Hungary.
The required documents vary depending on the event and the applicant's family history.
For example, registering a marriage may require obtaining a detailed foreign marriage certificate. If either spouse was previously married, documentation concerning the termination of earlier marriages may also be necessary.
Applicants should check the specific requirements before obtaining documents, as not every type of foreign certificate is accepted for Hungarian civil registration.
